I am really glad I took this Writing class because the skills I have learned about cover letters and resumes have already been so helpful and landed me an interview for a job that will prepare me for my future in nutrition and teach me valuable skills. The resume process as a whole was not easy, but starting at the beginning by reading the chapter about how resumes should be written, listening to my peer’s discuss how they have been taught to write resumes and creating and editing my own resume for an actual job I applied for, made me realize my skills and how to present those on a resume as well as my experience, volunteer work, and certifications. The previous resume I had was from high school but was very general. I never thought to tailor it to a specific job, highlighting what the employer is looking for. I have a strong core for my resume now and it will be easy for me to tailor it and add new experiences I have for future jobs. The resume and cover letter project have been very beneficial. I know there are small things I could revise and I have made many edits, but for the current position I am applying for and for this project, I think it is sufficient. I’m glad I found the ResumeNow site because it made my logo really stand out and it looks much better in that format than in the GoogleDoc I started with.

I think my resume was perfectly fine for the job I already applied for, but my peers offered some good advice to improve the overall look and length of my resume for future jobs. I had my work section first, and they suggested highlighting my education first which I accepted the suggestion and also added the date of my study abroad experience. They suggested I add what I gained from this experience. I did gain a lot of valuable skills and grew a lot as a person while I was there such as intermediate Spanish, problem-solving, traveling alone, international currency, and the Mediterranean diet. I may highlight these if I have jobs that relate more to global cooking and travel, but I think that could also leave room for interviewers to ask me some questions. I learned that I needed some clarification in the skills section, so I changed some of these to be more specific. My group also suggested I could increase the length on the second page, so I decided to add some more of my volunteer experience because I have many others but only listed the two I thought were the most relevant. They also mentioned I could add the role of my references so my employer knows exactly who they are contacting.
