Why did I choose this project? I chose to do this social media engagement project for my badging certification because I thought it was an area of our department of sustainability that needed help. During my time as an Eco-Rep, I have gained a lot of outreach and awareness skills such as using social media and blogs to relay information, so I thought it would be a perfect way for me to increase awareness of our department and make others intrigued about the sustainability happening on campus.

During my time at UNE, I learned valuable skills revolving around sustainability, such as how to recycle properly, how to compost, how to maintain a living wall, what it takes to make sustainable improvements happen on campus, and other skills on how to best care for the environment through my job as an Eco-Rep as well as talking with professors and students in the environmental field, going to meetings and events, and doing my own research.

I have learned how to work with a team, take notes at meetings, share my ideas, and come up with solutions to make our department and the school better. I have also learned technical skills, including how to use Excel, Piktochart, how to make Leaflets, and how to write and run a blog using UNE’s WordPress. I gained a lot of knowledge on how a university functions, who is involved, and how funding for projects works.

Overall, I have learned how sustainability can be most effective at a university, which gives me insight into how other universities or workplaces could adopt similar strategies as well as what can be done on a small scale to have a larger impact.

Below are a couple of examples of projects I worked on. The first example is a resolution I was asked to draft in response to an outside vendor requesting to do a balloon release. While it is common practice to find more sustainable means of celebrating or memorializing, it was necessary to have a written document to explain this practice. The second example is a draft for a proposed course in the proposed Food Systems Sustainability minor that is currently under review.
